Legible Earth: Score
Legible Earth is an ongoing project that investigates the inscriptions left by climate change. The project began through dialogue with climate scientists at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, responding to their collections while incorporating deep ocean sediment from their Core Repository into artworks. In Legible Earth (Score) deep ocean sediment from the North Atlantic Ocean is incorporated into printmaking inks, material used to study Arctic ice sheet loss. In multi-layered works, Raintree responds to these earthen monoprints through an improvisational drawing process, recalling maps, musical scores, and other systems of notation.
